As the UK’s cryptoasset regulatory regime takes shape, we are entering a critical period for firms' preparations. The regime may not start to apply until next year but major milestones are just around the corner, such as the Financial Conduct Authority finalising its cryptoasset rulebook in the coming weeks and beginning to accept applications for cryptoasset permissions from the end of September.
Our podcast series turns the spotlight onto different aspects of the incoming crypto regime. Listen to our latest three episodes now:
Getting ready to apply: Firms carrying on crypto activities in or into the UK, or planning to do so in the near-term, should take advantage of the FCA’s application period which runs from 30 September 2026 to 28 February 2027. Harry Eddis and Bethan Poole explain why this window is so important and why it is worth spending the time to get your application in good shape at the first time of asking.
Tokenisation issues: The application of the UK regulatory framework to tokenisation projects has been an active topic of discussion in the industry. Sam Quicke and Sophia Le Vesconte talk through how tokenisation can, depending on its structure, transform the legal nature of an asset and, in some cases, bring it into the scope of the cryptoasset regulatory regime.
Stablecoins: Different jurisdictions are taking different approaches to regulating stablecoins. Sam Quicke and Sophia Le Vesconte describe the UK’s proposed two-track approach under which UK-issued stablecoins will be treated as payment instruments and overseas stablecoins more like investment assets. They also look ahead to the Bank of England’s framework for systemic stablecoins.
